BiographyI am an Iowa native, born and raised in Van Horne IA. I grew up in a Chester Whites seed stock operation run by my grandfather (Walter) and my dad (Butch). I am now the 3rd generation raising Chester Whites and F-1 operation with an emphasis on the marketing show pigs and breeding stock.
I graduated from Hawkeye Community College in 1983 with a degree from the Animal Science Department. In the spring of 1983, I purchased the seed stock operation. The fall of 1983 is when Kandy and I got started. We now run Schminke Genetics selling breeding stock and show pigs, along with our sheep operation, selling show pig and market lamb projects throughout the United States. We do sell semen on the Chester White boars in our stud into purebred and commercial operations.
The family also grew when we were blessed with a son and daughter, Cody(23) and Chelsea(19). They are also actively engaged with showing, selling and raising the livestock. There is no other program that does any better job of teaching real world experiences. As my kids have been involved in the industry since they were able to walk, the friendships they have made will continue through the rest of their life. That is one of my greatest pleasures as a parent watching my kids and the program grow.
What is my most memorable judging or showing experience? I have been fortunate to judge several shows and have enjoyed them all. The greatest feeling as a judge is when that project comes walking into the ring and meets the standards that I expect. Your hair stands up on the back of your neck. As a judge, then you can elaborate on all the expectations that you wish for.
